Educating Young People about Good Nutrition

Through the Nutrisaun Diak, Futuru Diak project we learn how to prepare and cook fresh and nutritious food so that we can facilitate workshops for young people in Dili and in rural areas who do not have this information.  The Nutrition Training Program develops our project management skills so that we could plan, prepare, implement and evaluate the Nutrition Workshops.  Workshop and promotion materials were prepared using nutrition guidelines from the Ministry of Health and the World Health Organisation.

During 2019 - 2020, 51 youth Nutrition Educators provided peer-education for 2,100 young people, mainly young mothers through their participation in 144 community-based activities organized by JDN.

With funding from the World Health Organisation (WHO) educators worked with Nutritionists from the Municipality Health Service, community leaders and some NGOs to:
  • educate young mothers attending health services in local communities, using educational activities and cooking demonstrations;
  • provide workshops in neighbourhoods where young mothers were trained to organize similar community-based education;
  • organize nutrition expos in Dili, including a Healthy Lifestyle Expo attended by 700 young people; and
  • train young people from Turiscai, Manufahe Municipality to organise a Community Health Expo for 250 people, in collaboration with MRFOET.

JDN educators also developed a Nutrition Toolkit to promote the messages in the Ministry of Health’s Food Based Dietary Guidelines including 8 interactive tools that are used in community-based education.

On-line education during the COVID-19 State of Emergency on how to prepare nutritious meals reached over 12,000 young people through weekly FaceBook posts.
