SAYING NO TO SEXUAL HARASSMENT
JDN members have been working on ways to reduce sexual harassment by standing up for our rights every day and challenging sexual harassment and sexual violence when it is in front of us. The training that we provided during 2019 and 2020 is being used by young women who now stop and say to men who are behaving inappropriately “Why are you doing that? Our plans for 2021 are:
During 2019 and 2020 JDN formed a team of 30 young women as sexual harassment activists. They collected 80 case studies and educated 195 young women about sexual harassment laws, and skills to use when faced with this situation.
A petition for a Code of Conduct for bus and taxi drivers was signed by 1,280 young women and our proposal was discussed with Women members of Parliament who presented it to the National Parliament in September 2020.
- To plan and facilitate 10 workshops that provide education, information and strategies to young women regarding sexual harassment and gender equality. The education will focus on the laws and policies currently enacted in Timor-Leste as well as the UN Conventions on the rights of women and the sustainable development goals aiming to improve the conditions and rights of women. During the State of Emergency we are doing this education through on-line forums.
- To engage an increasing number of sexual harassment activists in community-based education and action, and writing up their actions that we will share in order to inspire others.
- To engage young men in planning and leading education about gender equality and sexual harassment so they can involve other young men in preventing sexual harassment.
- To interview 25 Microlet drivers to learn from their experience of sexual harassment that happens on their Microlets and ask some of them to work with us to advocate for a Code of Conduct for all public transport drivers.
- To advocate for the introduction of a Code of Conduct for all drivers of buses and taxis to reduce the incidence of sexual harassment on public transport.
- To work with GMPTL (the female Parliamentarians) to present our petition for a Code of Conduct to the Minister of Transport, gathering support from relevant persons from Government agencies, Commissions and Departments.

JDN has been promoting gender equality in Timor-Leste since our very beginning. We have been discussing our experiences of catching taxies, microlets and buses as we have all experienced sexual harassment on public transport. Because of this JDN decided to highlight this issue in the US Embassy #16Days16Ways campaign to reduce gender based violence. See the attached link:
